Academic/Professional activities  :
Completing her academic education, Sharmila took intensive training in Odissi classical dance from famous Gurus since 1984. She has performed at prestigious festivals and conferences in India and abroad which include:
Dover Lane Music Conference, Kolkatta; Jhankar Music Conference, Kolkatta; Sangeet Natak Akademi Youth Festival, Trivandrum (1993); Vrindavan Festival, U.P. (1998); Uday Shankar Festival, Kolkatta (1999/2002); Deccan Festival, Hyderabad (2002); India International Centre, Delhi (2003); sponsored by Indian Council for Cultural Relations. Sharmila gave performances abroad in Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Turkey.
She has also given performances and lecture demonstrations in USA and Italy. Panelled Grade ‘A’ artiste of Doordarshan she has given a number of TV performances. Being associated with oral school for Deaf children since 1996 whom she imparts training in dance, rhythm, and movement, Sharmila has choreographed and directed for them a number of dance-dramas including “Chandalika”, “Vande Matram”, “Good Earth” ( a dance on protection of nature) and a dance based an epic ‘Ramayana’ in which all the participants were hearing impaired. According to her they are special children who hear from the heart, listen with their eyes and talk with their hands.
