One
of those prominent figures who have heralded the renaissance
of Bharatanatyam over the last three decades, Vyjayantimala Bali
is
the senior most performing dancer of Bharatanatyam today. She
has to her credit a number of dance-dramas conceived, directed
and
presented by her. “Andal Thiruppavai’ Gurudev Tagore’s ‘Chandalika’,
Kavi Kunjara Bharati’s ‘Azhagar Kuravanji’, ‘Sant
Sakhu’, ‘Ekta’, a multi-dimensional ballet which
depicts the growth of the Freedom movement and ‘Om Santhi
Santhi Santhi’ on the theme of the message of universal peace. ‘Sangamam’ – another
thematic presentation to convey the universality of religions.
‘Sarva Sowkhya Pradayee’ based on ahimsa brings out in dance
form the message of Sri Mahavira espousing the Jain philosophy
and culture with relevance to our times. Her latest solo thematic dance
presentation is ‘Shrikrishna Jananam’ an adaptation
of the ragam – tanam—pallavi format in concert – standard
music. |

Her
talents surfaced early in life. She danced before the Pope at
the age of 5 and earned his benedictions. Her performances before
eminent
people, distinguished statesmen and foremost dignitaries include
President S. Radhakrishnan, Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru,
Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II,
H.R.H.
the Duke of Edinburgh, President Eisenhower and on the invitation
of many famous international organizations.
She was the first Indian dancer to be invited to perform at the
United Nations 20th anniversary celebrations of the Human Rights
Day at the General Assembly (1969). She
has performed at many dance festivals in India and abroad.

and Thayams have been revived and acclaimed by critics and connoisseurs.

to enable learner’s practice and perform this great art
has been introduced by her. |

To Vyjayantimala Bali with happy combination of high idealism
and
practical wisdom, politics became
a means of serving her country. Contesting from the South Madras constituency for the Lok Sabha,
she served for two consecutive terms in 1984 and 1989. The President
of India nominated her to the Rajya Sabha for her contribution
in the field of fine arts. Movie Star She
shot into fame in the celluloid world with her very first
Tamil “Vazhkai” followed
by Bahaar in Hindi. She emerged into reigning queen and a super
star of the filmdom in a very short
time and some of her memorable roles in films Nagin, New Delhi,
Madhumati, Naya Daur, Ganga Jamuna, Sangam, Sadhana and Amrapali
that were among some of the hits of that time. She became a household
name in India and still continues to be one. Her
interest in sports includes golf, table tennis, badminton
and horse riding.
